EVERETT – On a strange day in which the Tri-City Dust Devils (26-32) and the Everett AquaSox (30-28) finished a game in June that started in May and then opened their six-game series, the visitors from Pasco, Kennewick and Richland fell 8-7 in the resumed game and were shut out 8-0 in the seven-inning nightcap.
The day began with the teams tied 5-5 through three innings, picking up where they left off on Mother’s Day after the skies opened and heavy rain put a stop to things. LF Rio Foster got things started by doubling down the left field line to score 2B Adrian Placencia, who had walked, giving Tri-City a 6-5 lead. After a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch handed Everett the lead in the 7th, the Dust Devils found themselves down to their last two outs trailing 7-6. The team looked to lefty slugger 1B Ryan Nicholson for assistance and he delivered, taking a delivery from Everett reliever Stefan Raeth (3-1) and knocking it just over the angled wall in right field for a solo shot that tied the game at 7-7. The extension of the game did not last long, unfortunately, as AquaSox DH Luis Suisbel lined a pitch from reliever Sam Ryan (2-1) onto the berm in right field with one down in the bottom of the 9th for a walk-off solo shot and the win.
Tri-City and Everett then played their regularly scheduled and lightly shortened series opener, with the Dust Devils coming up with four hits in their shutout loss. CF Anthony Scull singled twice in his final two at-bats to try and help matters, and SS Arol Vera and 3B Ben Gobbel singled earlier in the game off one-time Angels draft pick and Seattle Mariners farmhand Marcelo Perez (3-2). The righty dominated otherwise, going five innings and striking out a season-high seven batters. Tri-City’s Jorge Marcheco (4-3), getting the ball in a spot start, took the loss after slogging through three-plus innings and giving up six runs.
DUST DEVILS NOTES
-Ben Gobbel extended a hitting streak to four games and his on-base streak to seven games with his single off the wall in the series opener. The versatile infielder has played everywhere on the infield but shortstop in 2025, with his 13 doubles at the plate matching Ryan Nicholson’s total for third-best in the Northwest League.
-Starter Keythel Key, who began the resumed game on May 11th, slotted in to the week to pitch on Tuesday and safely continue where he left off. The right-hander ended up throwing 128 pitches in the game, 59 on Mother’s Day and 69 Tuesday night. He went 6.2 innings, striking out four and getting a no-decision.
-30 days, 2 hours and 35 minutes elapsed from the first pitch of the game between the two teams that started on Mother’s Day and ended Tuesday evening. That times out to 43,355 minutes, or 2,601,300 seconds.
